RUMFORD – Norman S. Gilbert, 75, of Front St. died unexpectedly on Tuesday May 4.
He was born June 3, 1928, in Mexico, a son of Fred and Amy (Dayon) Gilbert and attended schools in Mexico.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a motor mechanic. He was employed for 44 years with Oxford Paper Co. and Boise Cascade Paper Group of Rumford, retiring from the Mobile Garage as a supervisor.
He was a communicant of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Mexico; the Fr. Ambrose J. Barry Council 2091; Knights of Columbus; the Robert Shand Post 1641 VFW; the 25 and 40 Year Club of Retired Boise Cascade Employees.
He enjoyed gardening, reading, working on his computer and socializing with the Front Street Gang, made up of neighborhood children.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Helen (McKenna) Gilbert of Rumford; a son, Robert N. Gilbert of Canaan; a daughter, Linda E. Gilbert of Columbia, S.C.; three brothers, Donald and his wife Lucy of Rumford, Gilbert and his wife Ethel of Summersville, S.C., Bruce and his wife Laurie of Falmouth; his two best friends, Peanut and Heidi.
He was predeceased by a sister, Cecile; four brothers, Leo, Eugene “Buster,” Harold and Wilbur.
