Pleasant Street could be hardest hit this summer.
LEWISTON – City roads will be tied up by $20 million worth of work this year.
City, state and private projects will surround the downtown, according to Public Services Director Chris Branch. That will mean road tie-ups all summer. Branch listed summer construction projects for councilors during a meeting Tuesday.
“We put all of these projects on a map and realized that it was quite a lot,” he said. “We thought you should be made aware of it.”
Pleasant and Sabattus streets will be the hardest hit, Branch said, with state road projects and Water Department work planned for both.
“I think Pleasant Street could be the hardest hit, and I’d recommend people find another way to go for those roads,” he said.
Other work areas include Lisbon Street, where sidewalks near the southern gateway will be replaced; the corner of Lincoln and Main streets; sidewalk work on Main Street at Chapel Street; Adams Avenue and Pond Road.
“That will be a big relief to many people,” Branch said. “Pond Road is the worst street in the city.”
The Maine Department of Transportation plans to build new sidewalks and bike paths on Lincoln Street beginning in June, Branch said. The state also plans work along Sabattus, Bates, Pine and Pleasant streets and will fund a bike path project through Franklin Pasture.
The Lewiston Water Department plans projects on Horton, Pleasant, Scribner, Canal and Lisbon streets and on Ferry Road. The Sewer Department will expand sewer separation projects southeast of the downtown.
Those projects are all in addition to a new Wal-Mart distribution center, Oxford Network’s continued expansion on Lisbon Street, Northeast Bank’s Canal Street building, the Lewiston Public Library expansion and several proposed subdivision projects.
