PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) – Edmonton Oilers goalie Ty Conklin posted a shutout in a penalty shootout, and Andy Roach’s goal put the United States in the World Hockey Championships semifinals with an upset of the Czech Republic on Wednesday. Roach gave the Americans a 1-0 shootout win after the teams tied 2-2 through regulation and overtime. In the shootout, the first four shooters for each team missed. Then Roach, a defenseman who plays in the German league, made a left-to-right fake in front of Nashville Predators goalie Tomas Vokoun and stuffed the puck into the open net.

After that, Jiri Dopita, who used to play for the Philadelphia Flyers, shot wide, and the Americans gathered on the ice to celebrate with hugs.

They rallied after trailing 2-0 in regulation.

The U.S. opponent Saturday will be Sweden, which beat Latvia 4-1 with a goal and assist from Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson. Sweden, which defeated the United States 3-1 Sunday in qualifying, will have an even stronger roster for the rematch. Taking advantage of the early exits of Colorado and Detroit from the NHL playoffs, Sweden will add Avalanche forward Peter Forsberg and Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. Forsberg was the NHL MVP last season, and Lidstrom was chosen as the league’s top defenseman the past three years. The United States finished last in its qualifying group, so it had to face the top team from the other group: the Czech Republic.

After a scoreless first period, Martin Skoula gave the tournament hosts a 1-0 lead at 3:15 of the second period. Former NHL scoring champion Jaromir Jagr, the leading goalscorer in the tournament, made it 2-0 on a power-play goal at 6:04.

But the Americans came back. Richard Park of the Minne ota Wild cut the Americans’ deficit to 2-1 at 10:19, and then the Czechs’ Jan Novak accidentally tipped in a shot by the Phoenix Coyotes’ Erik Westrum past his own goalie at 11:01 in the third period.

In Thursday’s quarterfinals, Canada plays Finland, and Slovakia faces Switzerland.

Canada beat Sweden in overtime in last year’s final.
