LEWISTON – Richard Martin, Community Little Theatre director for “Scarlet Pimpernel,” is placing an audition call for 6:30 p.m. May 17 and 19 at Lewiston Middle School on Central Avenue.

Auditioners are being asked to use the back door of the school.

“The Scarlet Pimpernel” by Baroness Emma Orczy, a Hungarian-British novelist, begins in 1792 in France. The French Revolution has turned unbelievably bloody.

Hundreds of French men and women, too many of whom are innocent of any crime, go to the guillotine. Out of this chaos, one man emerges to right the wrong.

With his small band of men, he defies all odds, saving the doomed French in one ingenious rescue after another. He is known only as the Scarlet Pimpernel.

The principal roles are Marguerite St. Just, beautiful and married to Blakeney; Marie Grosholtz, a French artist; Percy Blakeney, the ‘Pimpernel’; Chauvelin, citizen of the French Revolution; Armand St. Just, Marguerite’s brother; St. Cyr, prisoner of the Revolution; and the Prince of Wales.

The roles of Percy’s Bounders are Ozzy, Dewhurst, Elton, Farleigh, Hal and Ben.

Supporting roles include Tussaud, friend to Marie; Mercier, aid to Chauvelin; Copeau, aid to Chauvelin; Jessup, butler to Percy; Robespierre; and palace sentry.

A chorus composed of cupids of Comedie Francaise, soldiers, prisoners, Paris street mob, guests at the Royal Ball, girl servants and tarts completes the cast.

Auditioners are being asked to choose a musical selection from “The Scarlet Pimpernel” or bring sheet music for selections from other shows. Musical selections from “Les Miserables” or “Phantom of the Opera” would be appropriate.

Appropriate, comfortable, but not baggy clothing is required for the dance auditions. Women are being asked to wear pumps, heels or character shoes (no stilettos). Men should wear hard-soled shoes (no sneakers, sandals or clunky shoes).

Men may be required to grow their hair, including beards and mustaches. Women could be wearing corsets during production
