LEWISTON – A clash between two KVAC lacrosse titans on Thursday turned into a laugher. In one of the more anticipated games of the year, Mt. Blue and Lewiston rode into the contest undefeated with a league championship on their minds. The Cougars stormed off the field on top.
Garrett Lake scored five goals and Buzzy Cyr added four goals and three assists to lead Mt. Blue to a 13-2 win over the Blue Devils at Don Roux Field.
“That is easily the best team we have faced all year,” Lewiston coach Tom Fournier said. “In a way it’s probably good that we faced this kind of game at this point in the season.”
“We were looking at this coming in as one of our biggest games of the year,” Mt. Blue coach Mark Cyr said. “There seems to be a lot of disparity between the top three or four teams in the conference and the rest, and this was a very important game not only for playoff positioning, but also for the KVAC championship.”
It actually took the Cougars (6-0) a few minutes to figure out how to penetrate the Lewiston defense. Riding the adrenaline from the beginning of the game, the Blue Devils scored the first goal of the game just 58 seconds in on a Ben Fournier shot from 10 feet after a Mt. Blue defender snapped his stick over Fournier’s shoulder trying to stop him.
“We knew coming in we had to contain the Fournier brothers,” Mark Cyr said. “They were the go-to guys in the game we scouted.”
After Ben’s goal, the Cougars took over, and started to pick apart the Blue Devils’ zone defense. Lake tied the score 16 seconds later, and seven seconds after that, Ben Sinclair put Mt. Blue ahead for good.
“This is the first year Garrett plays attack,” Mark Cyr said. “Having him out there with Buzzy and Luke Ferraira is a great combination. They seem to find each other well and pass well.”
“A lot of their goals were off of turnovers after we couldn’t clear the ball,” Tom Fournier said. “In the first quarter they absolutely killed us. We did better after that, but it was too late.”
Mt. Blue finished the first 12 minutes ahead 7-1 thanks to three goals by Buzzy Cyr, two from Lake and one from Sinclair.
In the second, Lewiston started to pour on some pressure, giving Freeman Scott a chance to showcase his abilities between the pipes for the Cougars. On the game, Scott stopped 19 shots, several to his stick side.
“I play left-handed,” Scott said. “Most shooters aren’t used to seeing that, and I got a lot to my stick side in the game.”
Mt. Blue scored the only goal of the second quarter.
Lewiston again started a half with a goal, scoring the first of the second half when Jon Fournier fired a low shot past Scott’s foot two minutes into the second half. Again, though, Scott and the Mt. Blue defense shut the Blue Devils down.
On the other side, Billy Brooks made 16 saves for Lewiston (5-1).
