Andrew Woolford turns a hat trick for Mt. Ararat.
RUMFORD – Andrew Woolford scored a hat trick and Ben Miller scored two goals as Mt. Ararat applied the pressure in a 10-4 win against Mountain Valley in a boys’ lacrosse game Thursday.
The Eagles scored three goals, twice in an 80-second span, as they threaded through and around the Falcons’ defense.
Mountain Valley received two goals from Mike Hansen, but the Falcons’ inconsistent offensive attack didn’t provide enough pressure.
“There was some keys in the game for us,” Mt. Ararat coach Matt Haskell said. “We played as a team and passed the ball well. I felt that we passed the ball around well and also won some ground stroke. Our defense was tough and it was hot out there.”
Mt. Ararat (2-4) scored three goals in the third quarter that shot down any hopes of a Falcon rally. Steve Drake received a pass from Miller and zipped the ball past Falcon goalie Lee Jolin (five saves). Moments later, Woolford scored on an assist by Ryan Vermette. Woolford added another goal that found the top corner of the net.
Mountain Valley had just scored to trail 6-4 and appeared ready to get back in the game. Hansen rushed in and fired a shot past Eagles goalie Jordan Marsh (six saves). Eric Meader assisted on the play.
“We’ve got to learn to play an entire game,” Falcon coach Ryan Casey said. “Mt. Ararat took advantage of our inexperience. But, offensively I liked what I saw. We were patient with the ball and executed well, by trying to move the ball around.”
The Falcons had grabbed a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Chris Smith and Alex Smith. Nic Smith assisted on the latter goal in the first quarter.
Mt. Ararat seized the momentum and scored three goals to grab the lead. Woolford connected and Miller scored twice.
“We’re trying to adopt a philosophy,” Casey said. “Instead of having to rely on a few guys, they need to be able to trust their teammates to be in position to either pass to or receive a pass. It’s coming along. I thought that Pat Harris and Chris Smith played strong defensive games.”
Hansen had scored on a power-play, with Cody Grasuck assisting, to trail 5-3 at halftime.
