FARMINGTON – Franklin Memorial Hospital will join hospitals across the country in celebrating National Hospital Week from May 9 to 15.

Special events have been planned.

The week kicks off Tuesday, May 11, with a Covering the Uninsured Day. Anyone without health care coverage is invited to stop by the hospital’s lobby from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to receive information and an assessment by the Franklin Health Access Project, a program that can provide health care services at a reduced or minimal cost to those who qualify.

Tours of the hospital will be given twice during the week. Anyone interested in seeing the new family birthing and pediatric units, oncology area, ambulatory surgical center and education center may attend.

Jill Berry-Bowen, chief operating officer, will give the tours at 9 a.m. Wednesday and again at noon on Thursday. People interested in taking part should meet in the lobby five minutes before the tour is scheduled to begin.

A noontime concert will take place Thursday in the Bass Room. Featured will be the Mount Blue High School Jazz Band, followed by the all-girls choral group, the Syncopations. Those attending may bring their lunch.

Rita Porter, care support nurse, and Susan Dalrymple, mammography technologist, will present One in Eight: Know the Facts About Breast Cancer, from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday in the Chisholm Room. The talk features guidelines for early detection of the disease and information on breast cancer screening and diagnostic services.

An art show presented by Franklin Child Care will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Bass Room. Featured will be a group mosaic and individual mosaics, sculptures and paintings with a “tree of life” theme created by children who attend the center. The show is the culmination of a week’s worth of lessons by artist-in-residence Nancy Glassman.

All events are free. People may also check out the collection of health and medical resources in the new and expanded medical library throughout the week. A librarian is available from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for assistance.

Friday is Patient Appreciation Day. Outpatients will receive a gift of appreciation at the time of their registration.

Special activities for staff include an appreciation barbecue luncheon in the cafeteria on Tuesday served by senior management and the annual employee recognition banquet on Thursday night for staff at five-year milestones or with 16 or more years of employment.
