The timeless efforts of Harry Smith have been recognized as the 2004 Maine Person of the Year by Wrestling U.S.A. Magazine.
Smith, who won a state wrestling championship for Mexico High School in 1969, has drawn praise throughout the wrestling community for the Web site that he created and keeps updated.
The Web site (www.maine wrestling.com) contains information on high school and youth wrestling throughout the state. This includes tournament results, schedules, multiple state champions and more.
Smith began taking his son Jonathan to PeeWee tournaments and realized that only one event posted its results on the internet. He also discovered that there was no place that listed upcoming tournaments. Some of these tournaments conflicted because neither one knew about the other. Upon searching the Web, only the Maine Amateur Wrestling Alliance existed, but nothing was mentioned about youth or junior high programs.
Understanding that that kids love to see their name on the internet, Smith, a carpenter/contractorin Canton, launched his own web site in 2000.
