AUBURN – If you were late, you missed everything that mattered.

The first four batters for Oxford Hills reached base and scored as the Vikings blanked Edward Little 6-0 in KVAC softball action Wednesday at Tribou Field.

Bailey Holloway opened with a single to center, Tasha Dubois reached on an error and Lauren Austin and Chelsea Cummings followed with singles.

“Coming out of a hard loss against Brunswick, we did pretty well to come out pretty strong today,” said Austin. “Leading off as we did boosted our confidence.”

Austin’s hit plated two runs while Randi Arsenault and Katie Budjinski each drove in one.

“We haven’t been a real offensive team,” said Oxford Hills coach Cindy Goddard. “We hit the ball much better and we play better when we have some insurance runs.”

“We kind of jumped on ourselves,” said Edward Little coach Gene Keene. “I don’t think any of those runs in the first were earned. We made a couple of errors and that’s the way it works. We haven’t been scoring enough runs to dig us out of a hole like that.”

While the Vikings (8-5) basically slammed the door early, there was a silent star as well.

Arsenault kept the Red Eddies off balance, fanning five and allowed two hits. Christie and Allie Sasser were the only two Eddies to hit safely.

“I was really trying to work on my location today,” said Aresenault. “I wanted throw hard and to change speeds and I think I did that.”

For virtually the remainder of the game, EL (4-9) and starter Brittany Short settled down. The Vikings bookended the game with two more runs in the seventh. Arsenault doubled for the key hit in the inning and the only extra-base hit in the contest.

“I just wanted to get a hit,” said Arsenault. “I just wanted to get some insurance runs even though we were up a lot.”

“She (Short) didn’t pitch bad in the first inning,” said Keene. “They got a couple of hits to go with the bad plays, but she’s throwing well. She’s thrown 21 innings with only one earned run and doesn’t have a win to show for it.”
