NEW GLOUCESTER – The Sabbathday Lake Shaker Museum, Route 26, will open for the season on Friday, May 28, Memorial Day weekend. The museum, situated in an active community of Shakers, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays (closed Sundays) through Columbus Day, Oct. 11.

Tours of the village will be offered. The Shaker Store and the Museum Reception Center are open to the public. Special events will include weekly crafts workshops and crafts demonstrations, nature walks, Friends of the Shaker Weekend, Portland String Quartet concert, Apple Saturdays and the Shaker Christmas fair.

The museum will begins its workshop season with four classes as follows:

June 5: Herb garden design, garden layouts and what herbs to use, starter plants provided, $40.

June 12: Shaker verse and pressed flower design, create a 4 by 6 inch framed design using Shaker herbs and wildflowers, $30.

June 19: Chair caning, learn the seven-step method of chair caning, $35.

June 19: Woodworking, basic wood joints, learn variations of tongue and groove, spline, lap, mortise and tenon, dovetail joints, $25.
