“Surgeon charged in attack on woman” (May 6). Isn’t that a lovely headline on the front page of the Sun Journal? Even the Lewiston Police Department pointed out to the Sun Journal that the charges against the accused had nothing to do with his occupation. It seems to me that the only reason the Sun Journal took it upon itself to make that front-page news was because of that man’s occupation.

In this country, it seems that when a person stands accused of a crime that person is guilty until it is proven that he is not. The reason for this is due in part to irresponsible reporting.

Don’t get me wrong, I am against any form of domestic violence. But I am also against trashing a person’s reputation and printing his life story with a nice picture to go along with it so everyone can point at him and his family the next day.

I wonder why everyone who stands accused of domestic violence is not front-page news? Why does everyone else arrested get something the size of a want ad? Are they not newsworthy enough?

I wonder if we will see a reporter on the front page tomorrow for something similar. Probably not? Now that wouldn’t be newsworthy, but how would you feel?
