The event is a preparation for the Summer Games.

OXFORD COUNTY – For the third year in a row, the Gouin Sports Complex at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in South Paris will host the Oxford County Regional Special Olympics Training Day.

More than 130 athletes, 80 coaches and 30 volunteers will take part in the Special Olympics sanctioned event. Teams registered this year come from Casco, Raymond, South Paris, West Paris, Harrison, Norway, Bridgton, Oxford, Fryeburg and Mechanic Falls.

The Training Day allows athletes to prep for the upcoming 36th Annual State Summer Games traditionally held at the University of Maine on June 11-13.

Special Olympics is founded on the belief that people with mental retardation can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports, adapted as necessary to meet the needs of those with special mental and physical limitations.
