AUBURN – Beatrice E. Wood, 88, of 7 Granite St., Auburn, died Wednesday, May 12, at her residence. She died suddenly with dignity and family present.

She was born in Rumford on Sept. 19, 1915, the daughter of Francis X. Hurley and Matilda Belanger. A longtime resident of Auburn, she lived at 410 Turner St. before moving with her daughter, Carol Mashaw, six years ago.

She graduated from Edward Little High School in 1933. She married Ralph E. Wood on Dec. 29, 1942. He was a World War II veteran and died on Oct. 15, 1961. She was the union secretary of the Lewiston-Auburn Shoeworkers’ Protective Association for many years, before retiring in 1973 to care for her grandchildren.

Above all, Beatrice was devoted to her family and treasured the time spent amongst family and friends. She particularly enjoyed the family reunions at Don’s Cottage. She epitomized unconditional love. She had a passion for sewing, knitting and cooking. She spent many pleasurable days at the Horizon 55 quilting group. In her later years she enjoyed playing cards, making puzzles, reading and doing word search and fill-in puzzles. She also became a fan of the Boston College Eagle’s football team.

She was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Church. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of the many grateful people that she touched.

She is survived by her brother, Ralph Hurley and his wife Valeria of South Portland; her daughter, Carol Ann Mashaw and her husband Donald of Auburn; her three grandchildren, Kelli McDonald and her husband Kevin of Sabattus, Heidi Brooks, MD, of Auburn, and Katherine Brooks of Auburn; and three great-grandchildren, Miranda McDonald of Sabattus, and Madison and McKenzie Brooks, both of Auburn.

She is also survived by many loving nephews and nieces, their extended families, and several close friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph E. Wood; and three sisters, Marjorie Vaillancourt, Emily Crockett, and Gertrude Hurley.
