FARMINGTON – A young mother and an expectant mom packed up their belongings Friday and moved out of Kerr House. It was the end.

Despite an effort to keep the home for pregnant and parenting teenagers that had been struggling financially operating, it closed Friday.

Two other young mothers moved out earlier this week. The young mothers were able to take the cribs, high chairs, rocking chairs, diapers, strollers, and personal belongings. They also received a box of food.

A young mother with a 15-month-old child who is in the custody of the Department of Human Services was moved to foster care in Lewiston.

She said she would have to get up at 5 a.m. in the morning on week days to travel to school in Farmington.

On Friday, interim Kerr House Director Judy Rawlings and house parent Sue French helped the girls pack and were cleaning up the house before closing.

The women were the only two staff members left. The others had already been laid off.

The Positive Turning Points for Youth Board of Directors voted last week to close the home due to mounting debt and concerns about the financial viability of the program.

Rawlings said she would be working part-time to finish up what needs to be done. The board is pursuing options on programs and the house, she said.

“All of the young mothers have found a place,” she said.
