In 1950, the president of the United States proclaimed the third Saturday in May as Armed Forces Day, which marks the unification of our several military services and the creation of the Department of Defense as provided for the National Security Act of 1947.

Designed to replace the individual celebrations of the respective services, Armed Forces Day is intended to symbolize unification and demonstrate the close working relationship of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and the Reserves.

We should remember the individuals who have served – especially those who are currently serving – for actively protecting all the United States stands for. Their commitment to giving 100 percent to their duties represents a very proud and patriotic part of American history. Friends and families are to be commended for their unwavering support and encouragement of their loved ones during military service.

So, let us take time out to reflect upon the many contributions of America’s military personnel.
