LEWISTON – Anne Niemiec, who helped turn the local adult education program into a multi-site, award-winning program, is retiring. She has served as director for nearly 20 years.
“It’s time to do other things,” she said.
Niemiec, 62, started with the program in the mid-1980s. Although Lewiston Adult Education served a variety of students, from high school dropouts to homemakers, it was a small program that offered classes only at one site.
“They all started at the same time,” Niemiec said. “Now, of course, it’s very different.”
The program currently serves more than 300 people a year, with classes held day and night in 20 locations.
Since Niemiec took over, the program has won numerous statewide awards. In 1999, it was nominated for a U.S. Department of Education award for outstanding program. Niemiec has also received several awards for her work, including the 1999 Gerald LeVasseur Award by the Maine Adult Education Association.
Niemiec will leave at the end of June. The school system, which oversees Lewiston Adult Education, will review the position and hire a new director in the coming months.
