FARMINGTON – The first meeting of a new breast cancer support group will be 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, June 1, in the Allen Room at Franklin Memorial Hospital. The group is for women who have or have had breast cancer.

The support group, offered in collaboration with the American Cancer Society and the Healthy Community Coalition, is a free service of the hospital’s Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center. Each meeting will feature presentations, as well as a time of sharing personal experiences and concerns.

The group will meet the first Tuesday of each month and be facilitated by Rita Porter, R.N., patient support nurse, and Audrey Brown, a physical therapy aide. Light refreshments will be served.

“Through cooperation and discussion, we can make living with breast cancer a little easier,” said Porter. “We believe the more resources women have, the more empowered they are to confront their cancer and the effects it has on their lives.”

Some of the presentations will cover improving your appearance, coping skills, nutrition, intimacy, and spirituality.

The June 1 discussion will focus on “The Community and You,” led by Debbie Trask of the Cancer Society. Trask has been involved in numerous local ACS-sponsored events including Reach to Recovery, Road to Recovery, Relay for Life and Daffodil Days.

No appointment or registration is required. For more information, women can contact Rita Porter at 779-2430 for the Farmington area; 645-4911 for Livermore Falls, Jay and Wilton areas; or (800) 398-6031 toll-free from all other areas.
