BERLIN, N.H. (AP) – The city council is considering a curfew for teenagers under 18.
A minister presented the council with a proposed ordinance, but city officials had already been considering a curfew for a while. The council discussed the curfew proposal Monday night and asked police to study it.
The curfew would apply to minors between midnight and 5 a.m. unless they were working, running errands for their parents or returning from a community event. Parents would be fined if their children repeatedly violated the curfew.
Some councilors think the ordinance would pressure parents to take more responsibility for their children. But others said it would be hard to enforce.
Councilor Paul Grenier said the city had a curfew when he was growing up – and it didn’t work.
