LEWISTON – Howard E. Johnson Sr., 87, a resident of Sawyer Road, Greene, died Tuesday, May 18, at CMMC.

He was born in Lewiston on April 7, 1917, the son of Bertrum and Mildred Chadburn Johnson. He was educated in the Lewiston schools. He served in the United States Army during World War II, the European and African Theaters. On Jan. 17, 1941, he married Helen L. Bragg of Greene in Lewiston.

He worked at Bates College in Lewiston as a supervisor in the paint department for many years, retiring in 1982. He loved being with his family especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed working in his gardens, always having lots of veggies to give away, he loved horse racing, especially watching his horse, “Catch on Killean” race.

He was a Mason belonging to Ashlar Lodge in Auburn, Square and Compass Club and was a member of Scottish Rites.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years; two sons, Howard Johnson Jr. and his wife Glenda of Lewiston, Ronald T. Johnson and his wife Bonnie of Greene; a daughter, Brenda Poland and her husband Charles of Turner; five grandchildren, Darlene Pinard of Greene, Thomas Johnson of Greene, Tracy Laqueux of Leeds, Lisa Hunt of Turner and Chris Poland of Leeds; seven great-grandchildren with Baby Savannah due to be born next week; one sister, Trudy Ricker and her husband Bernard of Lewiston.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Ralph, Bryon and Albert Johnson; and two sisters, Glenice Smith and Laura Dunn.
