Mary Jane Newell’s letter to the editor (May 11) complained that Democrats are ruining Maine’s economy.

Mrs. Newell did not mention that Republican President George W. Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress are ruining our national economy and have put thousands of Americans out of work.

She did not mention that the Republican president and Congress have increased the national deficit astronomically while reducing taxes for the rich. And they continued spending.

Mrs. Newell did not mention that the Republicans have increased spending to the tune of billions in the Iraq war without finding weapons of mass destruction, the reason the Republican president forced the war.

The Republicans also have lost the lives of American and Maine men and women in the Iraq war for their propaganda machine, which doesn’t have the integrity to stop its half-truths or lies.

I don’t think Republicans will solve Maine’s economic problems when they have ruined the national economy with increased spending, an increased deficit, tax reductions for the rich and have undermined their integrity with the Iraq war. The math is not on the Republican side.

I think Democratic Gov. Baldacci and the Democratic-controlled Maine Legislature focused on the difficult, inherited budget problem in the recent session as they should have. They sought to solve the budget problem first, then make changes in the tax code. It would not have been good sense to cut taxes to add to the budget problem.

The Democrats were responsibly dealing with the Maine economy.
