LEWISTON – Corona Caouette, 88, of 481 Maine St., Poland Spring, died Wednesday, May 19, at Ste. Marguerite d’Youville following a short illness.

She was born March 29, 1916, in Lewiston, the daughter of Joseph and Alma (Ouellette) Beaulieu. She was the wife of Roger J. Caouette, who died March 6, 2002. She attended school at the Marcotte Home, the Jackman Academy, and she finished her education at St. Joseph’s School in Lewiston.

She was employed at the Androscoggin Mill during the Depression years. It was here that she met her husband, Roger J. Caouette. They married in July of 1938, and moved to Poland Spring in 1946 to help manage and operate the family business, the Wayside Inn.

She worked at the Wayside until 1968 when it closed. She was then employed by the Job Corps Center at the Poland Spring Hotels and later became a member of the housekeeping staff at the Poland Community Health Center. She worked there until her retirement in 1985.

Mrs. Caouette was a member of the Auburn Catholic Community at Sacred Heart. She was a devoted parishioner and was instrumental in raising money for the parish school. She worked diligently to sell books of chances to raise money to pay for a bus that would go as far as Poland to pick up kids and transport them to Sacred Heart School. This guaranteed her children an excellent elementary school education.

She was a member of the Golden Age Club of Sacred Heart and enjoyed the social functions and comradery.

Mrs. Caouette enjoyed her family, all social occasions and family gatherings, Mother’s Day at OOB, lobsters, clams and all things sweet. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and caregiver. She believed in keeping the family together and the power of her love did just that. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her seven children, Monique Moody of Matinicus Island, Rachel Bonney of Minot, Carmen Caouette of Gray, Joline and Marcel Chaloux Jr. of Auburn, Paul and Sharon Caouette of Riverside, Calif., Robert and Gloria Caouette of Minot and Michael and Karen Caouette of Poland Spring; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
