RUMFORD – The Moontide Water Festival Committee has come up with several new ideas for the four-day festival.
The festival, now in its eighth year, takes place from July 1-4, and will be capped off with a fireworks display at the reflection pool of the Androscoggin River.
New events shaping up so far include a craft fair and flea market to be held undercover at the former Agway store on Railroad Street, and a pizza contest.
Dozens of crafters will have their wares available. In the pizza contest, for $5 festival-goers can try every pizza entered by the area’s restaurants that participate, then vote for their favorite. The most popular will win free advertising.
An art show created by Mountain Valley High School and Dirigo High School students, and sponsored by Lem Cissel, will take place on the sidewalks of the downtown area. Cissel is also supplying sprinklers and towels for those who want to cool off from the expected hot July weather.
The SeniorsPlus center will offer a breakfast on July 4, and the Greater Rumford Community Center is planning a variety of children’s games.
As in the past, 5K and 10K foot races will be run, a car show will be on exhibit and a variety of entertainment presented throughout the four days. New performers this year include Native American storyteller and drummer Nightshade Wolfstone Francis, as well as bands Mistaas and Straight Up.
Volunteers are needed to help with various events. Anyone who wants to help should call Matt Plante, chairman of the committee, at 364-9087, or one of the other committee members.
