HEBRON – Hebron Academy, accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges since 1946, is participating in a review process to assure quality improvement. The process occurs about every 10 years for all NEASC-accredited schools.
The independent private school, with 250 students, has already started work on expanding the integration of technology into its curriculum, modifying its student advising system and enhancing the residential life program.
The efforts are in response to recommendations from a yearlong self-study and observations by a visiting committee of NEASC-selected educators who spent three days recently at the co-ed school talking to faculty, students and staff of the school, which serves grades six through post-graduate.
Afterward, Committee Chair Jean Norris wrote, “It was clear to all on the committee that the adults who work with young people are professionals with big hearts and high aspirations for students.”
The committee saw “the sense of community all around us, and saw evidence at every turn of the faculty’s dedication and commitment. That spirit, as you know, is the heart of the school,” Norris said.
The first step in the accreditation process was an intensive self-study involving Hebron students, teachers, staff and parents.
“We are proud of the work that we’re doing to put Hebron on a strong footing for the start of our third century,” said John King, head of school.
Hebron serves both day, middle and upper schools, and boarding, upper school, students, so the review also included standards for residential programs.
NEASC, founded in 1885, is the oldest of six regional accrediting associations in the U.S. It serves more than 1,800 public and independent schools, colleges, and universities in New England.
The visiting committee reviewing Hebron Academy included educators from Miss Hall’s School, North Yarmouth Academy, Providence Country Day School, Wilbraham & Monson Academy, Cambridge School of Weston, Lee Academy and Tilton School.
