AUBURN – Not even Lewiston’s four-run outburst in the sixth inning could shake up the nonchalant Edward Little Red Eddies Friday afternoon.

EL (6-10) took it all in stride as most of its 11 hits pot-marked right field and Matt Bennett refused to call it a day on the mound when the stubborn Blue Devils’ bats came around late in the Class A baseball game at Pettengill Park.

Bennett held his ground and EL’s defense backed him up as the Red Eddies beat the Blue Devils (6-10) for a second time this season, 8-4.

“Good things happen,” said EL coach Scott Annear. “It gets things moving. They have been doing so well when they are on. I know the guys can hit.”

Indeed.

Things started going EL’s way from the outset when the Red Eddies punched in a pair of runs in the first inning with two outs. Third baseman Justin Ciszewski, who went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, singled and came home on error at second base. With Elie Brandon on second after the error, catcher Nick Taylor blasted an RBI single to right to score Brandon.

The hits kept on coming from the Red Eddies and Bennett kept Lewiston scoreless for five innings.

“When (Bennett) is on a roll, he does a good job,” said Annear.

While Bennett held the fort on the mound, EL held up its end of the bargain on offense, collecting a total of four runs in the third and fourth innings.

The Red Eddies wasted no time in the third when Lewiston pitcher Luke Potter plunked left fielder Kyle Smith. He quickly came home on designated hitter David Roberge’s double to right field. Roberge also tripled and scored a pair of runs.

The fourth inning was almost an instant reply of the third. Right fielder Brian Erickson singled and moved to second on Dave Chesley’s sacrifice bunt. Erickson scored when Roberge smashed a 1-2 pitch to centerfield for a triple. Roberge eventually crossed the plate on Ciszewski’s single to make it 6-0 for EL.

“They came out and hit the ball,” said Lewiston coach Don King of the Red Eddies.

After EL scored another run in the fifth, Lewiston jump started its offense in the sixth. The four-run uprising began with one out. Left fielder Mike Johnson got on with a fielder’s choice and moved to second when Mark Miller walked. Catcher Mark Mendelson was hit by a Bennett pitch to load the bases.

Phil Chaput then reached on an error, which allowed Johnson and Miller to score. But Mendelson was hurt on the play at second and Josiah Chick came in to pitch run. Chick and Chaput scored on Brian Blais’ two-run double deep to centerfield.

“We seem to get something’s going with two outs,” said King. “They have hung tough all year long. We have done that all year long.”

The Red Eddies scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth. Ciszewski tripled and scored on Brandon’s single.
