Catholic Bishop Michael Sheridan of Colorado Springs recently stated that parishioners should not receive communion if they back politicians who support abortion rights, stem cell research, euthanasia or gay marriage.

While the bishop has the right to express his views on these issues, coercing his parishioners’ votes in this way is an unwarranted intrusion into politics and can only be seen as an endorsement of the Republican Party platform, despite the fact the President Bush also supports the death penalty and preemptive war, contrary to church teaching.

One requirement of tax-exempt organizations is that they stay out of politics. Perhaps it is time for the Catholic Church in Colorado to begin paying taxes.
