CUMBERLAND (AP) – Two men and a woman wanted as material witnesses in the fatal shooting of a New Hampshire man last week were in custody Saturday evening after being arrested by Maine State Police.
Troopers arrested Shawn Hopkins, 27, and his 22-year-old brother Ryan Hopkins, both of Augusta, along the Maine Turnpike in Cumberland, where they were driving between 5:30 and 6 p.m. Saturday, spokesman Stephen McCausland of the Maine Public Safety Department said.
Police also arrested Vania Babikov, 22, at a house in Gray, McCausland said.
The three were sought in connection with the fatal shooting of Julius Petrovic, 60, of Bretton Woods, N.H., last Monday. Petrovic was shot in his parked sport utility vehicle in an information center parking lot along Interstate 295 in Yarmouth.
The two brothers were taken to Cumberland County Jail in Portland. Babikov, of South Portland, was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for reasons that were not immediately clear.
McCausland said details surrounding the arrests also were sketchy. But he said the two men were not in the car police had been looking for.
Another woman believed to be one of the brothers’ girlfriends, Penny Ann Black, 28, of Old Orchard Beach, remained in custody this weekend.
