Perhaps Rev. Douglas E. Taylor (May 17) has forgotten a few things about being a child when he writes claiming J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series is religious propaganda.

Children have magical thinking. It is the essence of the creative mind. It is the dreamers that take us to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. While watching the Mars rovers (Spirit and Opportunity) communicate for the first time, it was not the joy of the men and women I saw at NASA, but rather the pride of a bunch of middle-aged children whose dreams had become reality.

J.K. Rowling has a keen sense of her own inner child. This is why her books sell to young and old alike. If my children ever stop dreaming, I will be greatly concerned.

My limited understanding of Wicca as a religion is that all things in the universe are connected, like “The Force” in Star Wars or the “Holy Spirit” from my own upbringing. Declaring Wicca as something bad or offending would teach my children intolerance, which could develop into hate for something different. Please ask any Muslim cleric or Jewish rabbi if this would be acceptable to them.

Book banning of any kind limits the creative and magical thinking needed for children to become the dreamers of our future. Perhaps, it is not society that needs to wake up.

It’s called fiction for a reason.
