AVON – Cross Road in Avon is due to be reconstructed this summer.

Selectmen meeting May 18 reviewed updated costs and decided that enough funds had been raised to repair the lower portion of the road to Route 149. They also discussed the option of borrowing money to complete the rest of the road next summer. Taxpayers’ approval for the loan will be sought at a town meeting once lending options have been researched.

Selectmen also decided to hold an informational town meeting to discuss the issue of junk vehicles in residential yards at 10 a.m. June 5 at the Avon town house.

According to First Selectperson Joyce Potter, many properties in town have two or more unregistered junk vehicles in their yards in violation of Maine law. Avon selectmen want to educate townspeople about recycling and disposing of the eyesores. The Department of Environmental Protection has sent informational booklets about recycling and trash disposal to be dispersed at the meeting. Residents with old, unregistered vehicles in their yards are strongly encouraged to attend.

Selectmen voted unanimously to apply for a grant from the Maine Local Roads Center for a work zone safety sign and materials package worth approximately $3,000. If the grant is approved, the town’s cost will be $375. Only 25 Maine towns will receive such grants.

The next selectman’s meeting will be at 6 p.m. June 1.
