TURNER – Step dancers Renee Blacken and Andre Demers and fiddler John Cote, all from Lewiston-Auburn, will join several other Maine folk performers in a multi-generational celebration of the French-Canadian heritage hosted by award-winning Montreal entertainer Benoit Bourque.

A master-artist in the Maine Arts Commission’s Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program, Bourque is presenting two days of workshops in traditional Quebecois music and dance to Leavitt High French students. A class of Turner Elementary School fourth-graders that teacher Christine Marcous’ French IV students have “adopted” will also be offered training.

During Wednesday evening’s presentation the youths will be invited to join Bourque and his Maine musical protgs on stage to demonstrate some of what they’ve learned.

Proceeds from the event, which is co-sponsored by the French Department of Leavitt High School and the Association Canado-Americaine’s Chapter 52 based in Lewiston, will go toward supporting future cultural arts programming for local youngsters.

Admission is $5, with a special two-for-one price for any student from elementary up through college age who comes accompanied by a grandparent, great-grandparent or great-aunt or uncle. The show starts at 7 p.m. and will last approximately 90 minutes.

Leavitt High School is on Lower Street off from Route 4 in Turner, south of its intersection with Route 117. More information and advance reservations are available by calling 782-0386.
