LEWISTON – Alexandra “Alex” Karayianis, 87, of Seville Place in Lewiston, died Monday afternoon, May 25, at Central Maine Medical Center with her family at her side following an extended illness.

She was born in Lewiston Dec. 13, 1916, a daughter of Kostas and Vasiliki (Constantinou) Karayianis. She graduated from local schools and also from business school and remained a lifelong resident of Lewiston.

“Alex” first worked for many years at the Pepperell Mill as an executive secretary and later at the Harriman Associates architectural firm also as an executive secretary until her retirement.

She was Past President and Secretary of the local Daughters of Penelope (an auxiliary of the AHEPA Assoc.) and Past President of the Holy Trinity Philoptohos (Ladies’) Society and later served as Treasurer. She was also a member of the Council of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church for many years.

She leaves behind a sister, Irene (Karayianis) Rice of Huntington Beach, Calif.; four brothers, Veno and his wife Esther of New Castle, N.H., William and his wife Emily of Lowell, Mass., John and his wife Nita of Centenial, Colo., and Sayre and his wife Sara of Washington, D.C.; a special nephew, Charles Karayianis of Lowell, Mass.; a niece, Sharon Karayianis M.D. residing in India; several nieces and nephews; and cousins in Greece.
