LOCKE MILLS – A memorial honoring World War II Veterans will be dedicated at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, in Washington and can be viewed on big screen television at the Greenwood Town Hall.
World War II veterans from West Paris north to Woodstock, Greenwood, Bethel, Newry, Gilead and Milton are invited to watch the dedication. A noon lunch of soup, salads, sandwiches and dessert will be served free to WW II veterans and the person accompanying them.
Entertainment will follow, including barbershop harmony by “Four on a Match” and WWII songs by the Parisians.
The auxiliary will accept help from other posts and auxiliaries in the area and other organizations wanting to help. Transportation may be needed for veterans who want to attend but have no way of getting there.
In order to judge the amount of food needed, veterans planning to attend are asked to call Olive Risko at 665-2909 or the Legion Hall at 875-2375 and leave a message. Those who need transportation also should call ahead.
According to Risko it is fitting that communities recognize the veterans as heroes from “The Greatest Generation.”
“We are losing many of them everyday as they age,” she said.
The event is sponsored by the Jackson Silver American Legion Auxiliary with help from the post.
