NORWAY – The Fare Share Commons, under the auspices of the Commons Arts Collective, will host a show with highlights from more than 20 years of creative work by Westbrook-based artist and collective member Mary Brooking.

The show, “Bearings,” will open with a public reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 4, and run through June 26. Brooking, who received a bachelor’s degree in fine art from Hiram College in Ohio in 1978, has shown her work in Ohio, New Mexico and Maine.

She has explored a variety of media, including acrylic, oil and watercolor painting; graphite and charcoal drawing; pottery and found-object sculpture.

She began her artistic career as a graphic designer and illustrator. As a fine artist, she started as a realist, but soon focused on creating images in which representation and abstraction meet and overlap. Her greatest inspiration is nature, specifically the natural beauty of Maine.

As a departure, she also is developing abstract and conceptual work based on her children’s drawings.

The show will include work from every phase of her career: landscapes and paintings of rocks and stones, figure drawings in charcoal, paper collages. More than half of the work to be shown was produced since 2001.

At 7 p.m. June 13, Brooking will host a Conversations with the Artist session.
