AUBURN – Twelve four-person teams and numerous volunteers gathered at the Hilton Garden Inn Riverwatch to participate in Literacy Volunteer’s sixth annual “Letters for Literacy” Scrabble Fest. Lewiston Mayor Lionel Guay Jr. officiated as judge and awarded the traveling trophies to the winning teams in each category.

The crowd raised $2,900 in pledges to benefit Literacy Volunteers students in Androscoggin County. Top fund-raisers Roger Girardin, Barbara Nadeau, Peter Geiger and Marty Corey won original watercolors donated by artists Sandy Nyberg and Annette Lavallee, a lamp donated by F.X. Marcotte, and a gift certificate given by the Korn Haus Keller.

“I thought I was a good Scrabble player, but these people are way out of my league,” commented one of the volunteers as she observed Saturday’s games. Competition was good natured, but intense among the group of wordsmiths.

Winners in the Scrabble Pro category were returning champions “The Letters,” including Roger and Marcel Girardin and Alex and Pat Roy. “The Chocolate Labs,” Dan and Judi Moreno, Sandy Nyberg and Peter Letourneau, won the social category.

Plans are already under way for next spring’s Scrabble Fest. For more information call Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin at 753-1772.
