RUMFORD – Incumbent Town Clerk M. Jane Giasson and former Assistant Town Clerk Marcia A. Chaisson are facing off for a two-year term as town clerk/treasurer in the June 8 election.

Both have many years of experience working with the public and both said they enjoy the variety that comes with working in a municipal office.

Giasson, 58, a resident of Swift Avenue, is running for her first, full, two-year term. She was elected to finish the remaining one year of a term started by long-time town clerk, Mary Ann Prue, who retired last year. Prior to becoming town clerk, Giasson served as deputy town clerk for 16 years.

In addition to the duties of town clerk/treasurer, Giasson also serves as deputy registrar of voters, Planning Board secretary and notary.

“This is a busy office. I like the job and want to continue doing it,” said Giasson. “I hope to continue to provide Rumford citizens with courteous and efficient service.”

Giasson is certified by the Maine Municipal Association as a town clerk and treasurer.

In her 17 years of working for the town, she has seen many of the municipal records change from paper records to computer. Soon, she expects game licenses to be computerized, and she hopes birth records will be in the near future.

Besides keeping track of vital statistics and licenses, she also prepares quarterly tax reports and weekly payroll for the town’s 85 employees, collects unpaid tax liens, and oversees town meetings and elections.

She and her husband, Arthur, are the parents of three adult children. She is a graduate of Stephens High School, a member of the Maine Town Clerk/Treasurer Association and attends St. Athanasius and St. John Church.

Chaisson, 38, is a resident of Knox Street. Although she is making a first-time run for elective office, she is familiar with the procedures of the town clerk/treasurer’s office, and other offices in the municipal building.

She served as assistant town clerk for one year during an illness of a previous town clerk, as assistant welfare administrator for seven years, and was the registrar of voters for six years. She has also filled in as town manager secretary and public works secretary for seven years, and is currently a deputy registrar of voters.

“I want to be back working with the public. I feel like I am custom-made for it – it’s what I do,” she said. “I feel I have the experience for the position of town clerk and treasurer.”

Chaisson currently works in a mill in Andover.

She was an active member of the town’s Bicentennial Committee for two years, served as secretary for the town’s Charter Commission, and assisted selectmen in the Business Visitation Program.

She graduated from Mountain Valley High School and has taken several computer and personnel management courses. She also volunteers at Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, is a member of the Peak A Week Hiking Club and attends St. Athanasius and St. John Church.

She is the mother of two school-aged children.
