LIMESTONE – The Maine School of Science and Mathematics will hold regional information meetings for high school students and their families. A representative, students and parents will share information and answer questions about the residential high school for students who will complete grades nine and 10 in June.

Regional information meetings are scheduled as follow s:

Portland: Portland Public Library, Tuesday, June 1, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Lewiston: Lewiston Public Library, Wednesday, June 2, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Augusta: Augusta Lithgow Public Library, Tuesday, June 8, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Writing stories

BATH – Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance will present “Writing the Stories Only You Can Write,” a four-day series of workshops led by author Rosalie Deer Heart, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays, July 7, 14, 21, 28, at the alliance.

The series will address the following questions: What are the recurring themes in your life? What sustains you? What do you know for sure? Writers will learn proven writing tools and techniques to empower creative self expression.

Deer Heart is a native Mainer who resides in California. She is the author of four books and is the recipient of the Founders Award for Distinguished Creative Leadership.

Cost is $80 for members and $100 for nonmembers. Space is limited to 15 and preregistration is required. Call MWPA at 386-1400 to register.

BATH – Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance will present “The Short Story: A Workshop on Form and Craft,” a workshop led by author Bruce Pratt, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at the alliance office.

The workshop will involve a hands-on approach to writing short fiction. The emphasis will be on learning the differences between short fiction techniques and those more suited for the novel, as well as developing changes in contemporary short fiction.

Beginning writers are encouraged to attend, as well as those with more experience. Space is limited to 15. Cost is $45 for MWPA members; $65 for others. Preregistration is required. Call MWPA at 386-1400 to register.

Writing winners

LEWISTON – Maine PBS has selected 12 winners for its 10th annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest from nearly 700 entries.

The competition asks children to submit written and illustrated stories to the public television station. It is open to youngsters in kindergarten through third grade. Maine PBS received 694 entries from children in Maine, New Hampshire and New Brunswick, Canada. The four first-place entries in each grade category have been forwarded to a national competition.

Maine PBS held an awards party for the winners and their families. Prizes have been awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners in each grade.

Area winners are: second grade, second place, Alex Tantillo, Auburn, “Animal Poems”; third grade, third place, Sylvia Beliveau, Lewiston, “The Little Stocking.”

Visit laboratory

BOOTHBAY – Area 11th-graders discovered what being a marine scientist is all about. Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in West Boothbay Harbor hosted research experiences and explorations in oceanography for students.

Bigelow has offered an educational program to high school students to promote careers in marine science and to strengthen an interest in science in general for the past 14 years. The Keller BLOOM Program gave students a chance to work in the laboratories and on the water.
