ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Mariano Rivera became the 18th player to earn 300 saves, and a surging Derek Jeter hit one of the New York Yankees’ four homers in a 7-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Javier Vazquez (5-4) pitched six-plus innings for the victory, and Rivera worked a scoreless ninth for his AL-leading 17th save. He became the first Yankee to record 300 in his career, and is the fourth pitcher to get 300 with one team, joining Trevor Hoffman, Dennis Eckersley and Jeff Montgomery.
Jeter continued his climb out of a season-long slump with three hits for the third straight game and helped the Yankees extend their longest road win streak of the season to five.
Royals 2, Twins 1
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Tony Graffanino beat out an infield single to deep short with two out in the ninth, scoring Wilton Guerrero from third and giving the Kansas City Royals a 2-1 victory over Minnesota Twins on Friday night.
Juan Rincon (6-3) walked Ken Harvey and Joe Randa with one out, then the runners moved up on an infield out by Benito Santiago.
Graffanino, recalled earlier in the day off the disabled list, slid head-first into first ahead of the throw from Cristian Guzman.
Indians 1, Athletics 0
CLEVELAND – Casey Blake hit the third pitch by reliever Jim Mecir into the left-field bleachers to give the Cleveland Indians a 1-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics.
Blake lined a 1-1 pitch from Mecir (0-4) for his sixth homer – and second game-winning shot this season at Jacobs Field to end a struggle in futility by both teams.
Orioles 7, Tigers 5
DETROIT – Miguel Tejada and Luis Matos homered, and the Baltimore Orioles snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 7-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.
B.J. Surhoff went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Orioles, who bounced back with a win after being outscored 41-17 in a three-game series against the New York Yankees.
Blue Jays 5, Rangers 4
TORONTO – Carlos Delgado hit a two-run homer in a four-run first, and Ted Lilly worked six innings for just the second time this season to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to their fourth straight victory, 5-4 over the Texas Rangers on Friday night.
Rod Barajas homered and tied a career high with four RBIs for the Rangers, who were shut out by the Chicago White Sox in their previous two games.
He hit a three-run homer off Terry Adams in the eighth, cutting Toronto’s lead to 5-4.
Lilly (3-2) won for the first time in five starts, allowing one run on six hits, while striking out four and walking a season-high five.
Lilly, acquired from Oakland in the offseason, pitched a complete game on April 26 against Minnesota, but hasn’t reached six innings in any other start.
Rookie Jason Frasor pitched the ninth for his third save in three chances.
Frank Menechino and Vernon Wells hit consecutive doubles in the first before Delgado homered off R.A. Dickey (4-5). Alexis Rios added an RBI single in the inning, his first RBI in the majors.
Josh Phelps gave Toronto a 5-1 lead in the third with an RBI grounder.
Dickey lost his fourth straight start, allowing five runs – four earned – in six innings.
Notes: Barajas also had four RBIs Sept. 28, 2002, vs. Colorado. … A ballboy interfered with a fair ball in the fourth inning. The umpires ruled it an interference double. … The Blue Jays placed 2B Orlando Hudson on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.
