The Maine Council of Senior Citizens is proud of our nationwide reputation in representing the interests of Maine citizens, especially the retired. After all, we were the ones that started the bus runs to Canada for prescription drugs. So we are concerned when someone writes a letter that misrepresents the actions of one of our legislative friends, Sen. Peggy Rotundo.

The letter (May 19) by Jacqueline Smith bears little resemblance to the complete truth. The $10 million she is talking about was only a temporary accounting device. All this money was returned to the State Retirement Fund and is still part of the Retirement Fund. Retirees should understand that their money is safe and, because she is on the Appropriations Committee, Peggy Rotundo helped keep it safe.

Peggy also helped us increase protection for retiree funds. Peggy has supported us in the past, and we will continue to support her.

Maine Council of Senior Citizens,
