GREENWOOD – About 60 people gathered at the Common in Locke Mills Monday for the town’s annual Memorial Day observance to remember and honor Americans’ sacrifices for their country.
A parade from the Jackson-Silver American Legion Post on Gore Road paused at the Common for the ceremony.
Jackson-Silver Post Commander Dan Grover said, “We are here today to honor those whose names appear on our war memorial and all the heroes who have fought for our freedom. We come here today to honor and remember all the men and women who have died for us. We are free thanks to their sacrifice.”
He read from several poems regarding the sacrifices of veterans who have given their lives in battle, and remarked as to the day also being known by many as Decoration Day and Poppy Day. He honored people, young and old, who volunteer their time to keep Memorial Day ceremonies continuing year after year.
“This day is also called Decoration Day and, since World War I, it has been known as Poppy Day to honor those who give out poppies as a way to raise donations so we can come together each year to celebrate our freedom,” he said.
Poppy Chairman Vera Cross then presented gifts to this year’s poppy girls in the greater Bethel area, Danna Winslow and Ethel Hoyt.
A wreath was cast on the Alder River in remembrance of men and women who have died at sea. Patriotic music was presented by the Mahoosuc Music Makers, a 21-gun salute was offered by the Jackson-Silver Post Firing Squad and Taps was played before the parade moved on to Mount Abrams Cemetery on Howe Hill Road.
After flowers were placed on veterans graves there the parade returned to the Legion Hall where refreshments were served and people had a chance to visit with old friends and guests.
