On June 8, voters will once again be asked to vote on Question 1. If passed, it will force the state to adequately fund K-12 public education at a level that will ease the dependence of funding it with property taxes.
Mainers understand the value of providing our children with a quality public education. However, many who truly support their local schools are being forced to speak out against their local school budgets because they can no longer afford to pay their property tax bills.
Residents have waited long enough (20 years) for the state to step up and pay its fair share of K-12 public education. If people have been paying attention this past year, they know that this governor and the Legislature do not possess the political courage to do what’s right.
On June 8, voters have the power to give them such courage.
I encourage the support of public education in Maine; I will vote “yes” on Question 1.
