LIVERMORE FALLS – Reliever J.T. Habbett earned a save after pitching out of a bases-loaded jam as the Wiscasset Redskins pulled off a huge upset with a 7-5 win against Livermore Falls. But it was the Andies who made things interesting by scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. A steady rain fell throughout the game, but not even a downpour in the fourth inning could interrupt the action.

No. 10 Wiscasset (8-7) advances to play No. 2 St. Dom’s in a quarterfinal contest on Thursday. The Redskins beat Livermore Falls 6-3 during the regular season and their confidence was a factor in this rematch. Some quick bats, combined with the craftiness of winning pitcher Ben Emery propelled Wiscasset to a seemingly insurmountable 7-1 lead

“For us it was a question of too little too late,” Andies coach Brian Dube said. “Ben Emery had our number again today. He kept our batters off balance and it was a lack of hitting that had gotten us in trouble. We finally got things going in the seventh inning and had the (potential) tying run on second base.”

Livermore Falls, which concludes its season at 9-6, sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh and had its rally caps on. Matt Belemonte and Brad Bryant each hit solid singles and a run scored when Chuck Drake’s batted ball was deflected out of play. The runners moved up two bases each and Mike Chimard and Josh Marceau each hit RBI singles.

The Andies trailed by two runs, and it wasn’t over because Emery (4-1) exited with no outs. The big right hander allowed four singles through six innings and the Andies’ run in the first was unearned.

Dan Hanson reached on an error and with one out and Matt Brouchu walked to load the bases. The next batter, Garrett Young, ran the count to 3-0, but Habbett bore down to record a strikeout. Belmonte hit a ball to third baseman Nick Bennett who juggled the ball, but secured it to force out Hanson by half a step.

“We let things get to wild in the seventh,” Wiscasset coach Todd Souza said. “Ben Emery had gotten tired, but he’s been a workhorse for us this spring, especially after we lost our No. 1 and 3 pitchers. Ben has a sneaky fastball and a knuckler that he likes to mix up.”

Wiscasset started out aggressively at the plate and had eight hits against Bryant through three innings. Ben Matzell led the offensive charge with three hits, including a two-run homer and a two-RBI single. Jake Crosby scored three runs.

“They really set the tone,” Dube said. “They hit the ball hard, but mistakes hurt us. That home run came with two strikes and so did another one of their big hits.”

Livermore Falls let golden opportunities slip away after stranding two runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings. Marceau and Hanson hit singles leading off the fourth. Bryant was thrown out at home plate in the fifth.
