LISBON FALLS – Lisbon took a chance in Tuesday’s baseball preliminary against Old Orchard Beach when the Greyhounds sent their No. 2 pitcher Tim Sautter (4-1) to the mound against a young but determined Seagull nine.

Lisbon was trying to save ace John Tefft for Game 2.

The Greyhounds went on to score three runs in the bottom of the second inning with the middle of the order doing the majority of the damage as Chris Kates and Sautter combined for five of the Greyhounds’ 12 hits en route to an 11-6 victory.

“We did the job early getting on base and driving the ball hard off Madore,” said Kates, who went 3-for-4 on the afternoon with two RBIs. Sautter also helped his own cause with a pair of singles as he reached base three times on the afternoon.

Sautter and the Greyhounds (12-5) did everything coach Randy Ridley could possibly have asked as they broke out to a 9-0 lead at the end of the fourth inning.

It looked like it would be a short night with the 10-run rule lurking in the Seagull’s future.

“Tim did the job. He wasn’t overpowering but he kept the ball in play and let the defense make the plays they needed to,” said Ridley.

Sautter allowed one run heading into the fifth inning. But a lack of concentration and some mechanical difficulties finally caught up to him as he allowed two walks and two singles with a pair of runs crossing the plate before Ridley brought in Tefft to stop the bleeding.

Old Orchard refused to give up, scoring three more runs in the sixth inning off Kates who came on in relief of Tefft erasing any ideas that the home team might have had about going home early.

“Were a young team but we never give up. We’ve faced NYA and St. Dom’s and played them tough twice this season,” said Old Orchard coach Tom LaChance. “We’re about a year away with only four seniors on this team.”

Lisbon moves on to play Monmouth in the next round Thursday.
