POLAND – The hunt was on Tuesday for a man who robbed a Route 26 convenience store at gunpoint Monday night.

Police said the suspect walked into the Big Apple at about 9:25 p.m., threatened a cashier with a handgun and then fled in a car.

Nobody was hurt in the heist, but the suspect made off with cash. The store was closed for several hours while Androscoggin County Sheriff’s investigators searched for evidence.

The Big Apple is at the intersection of routes 26 and 11 just beyond the Mechanic Falls town line.

Investigators Tuesday were asking for help from anyone who might have been in the area of the store between 9 and 9:30 p.m. Monday.

The suspect was described as a white man roughly 6 feet tall and weighing between 180 and 200 pounds. The man had a beard and mustache. He was wearing a dark gray or hooded sweatshirt, police said, and a black baseball cap with a red logo on the side.

The suspect was believed to have fled in a dark car, police said. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information can call Detective Sgt. William Gagne at 784-7361 ext. 214.
