LISBON – Selectman have set Saturday, Aug. 7, as the date for a special election of six at-large members to serve on the recently authorized nine-member Charter Commission.
Nomination papers for the positions are available from the Town Clerk’s Office and must be filed no later than Friday, June 25.
Voters at the recent municipal election approved establishing the Charter Commission. The panel will have nine months to come up with a proposed town charter that may include changes or improvements in how town government operates. The proposal will then be presented to townspeople at a public hearing, after which the commission will have three months to prepare a final version that will go to voters for approval. The entire process must be completed within 12 months, Town Manager Curtis Lunt said.
Selectmen will appoint three members and the remaining six will be elected by secret ballot.
In other action, the contract for striping center-lines and road side-lines was awarded to a Massachusetts firm, Marking Inc., on its low bid of $15,500.
Selectmen reviewed financial reports and approved $47,000 in year-end transfers, which will go to the Advisory Board for approval.
Michael Bowie, who was recently elected to a three-year term on the board was elected chairman, and former Chairman E. Charles Smith was named vice chairman.
Accepted was the resignation of Advisory Board Chairman Herbert “Pete” Reed, who was recently elected to the School Committee.
Selectmen are accepting applications from anyone interested in filling Reed’s seat until the next municipal election.
Twelve victualer’s license renewals were approved along with one mobile home park license.
Louis Levesque was re-appointed to the position of sealer of weights and measures and several other routine annual appointments were made. No action was taken on a Technology Committee memo pending a meeting with the School Committee for discussion.
