LEWISTON – George W. Langlais (Webber) died Wednesday, June 2.

He was born on Oct. 12, 1922 in Hamlin, one of 15 children born to Denis Langlais (Webber) and Melvina (Roy) Langlais; Mary, Simone, Arthur, Blanche, Pauline, George, Lucille, Yvette, Roderick, Georgette, Jeannine, Gene, Doreen and twins Rolande and Yolande.

He started school in Hamlin and moved to Lewiston in 1933 where he finished his education. George joined the Merchant Marine in October of 1942. He was the first merchant seaman under the National Maritime Commission to sail the Great Lakes. As a quartermaster for ships carrying munitions, gasoline, oil and military cargo he made 8 trips overseas between 1943 and 1946, 6 of which were before D-Day. He traveled to North Africa, Phillipines, Belgium, two trips to England, South Wales and Scotland where he remained until D-Day in case they were needed during the invasion. He was very proud to have served his country.

He married Carmen DeBlois on June 8, 1946 to whom he was married 54 years.

In 1948, he and a friend started a neon sign company called NeoKraft Signs. In 1950 he purchased Union Market, which later became Union Super Market on Oak Street in Lewiston. He was the proprietor of this business for 30 years. He was well known for his advertisements that always began ” George Sez”.

He was a member of many organizations including; the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Lewiston Exchange Club; Musical Literary Club, Elks Club, Post 22 of the American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus 4th degree. He was a devout member of Holy Family Parish.

In 1973, he was appointed to the Lewiston Fire Commission where he served until 1978. He was one of the original signers of the bill that brought 911 service to the Lewiston-Auburn area.

Following his retirement he and Carmen traveled to Spain, Mexico, Japan and enjoyed a Carribean Cruise. He traveled with family from Canada to the southern US. Being a real country fan he particularly enjoyed Nashville and the Grand Ol’ Opry.

He will be greatly missed by his family, his close friend Laurette Parent and all those people that he shared his jokes and stories with.

He is survived by six children, Don Webber and wife, Diane, Denise McCarthy and husband,Terry, Dan Langlais and wife, Pat, Ann Bulley and husband, George, Bill Langlais and fiance, Joanne and Tom Langlais; 13 grandchildren, Donald Jr., Denis and Denny Webber, Jenner, Amy Richard, Jessica Girouard, Tammy LePage, Nick Albert, Amanda Wentworth, Tina Wade, Lisa Langlais, Luke Bonenfant and Colby Brown; 16 great grandchildren; seven sisters; a brother and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Carmen in 2000, sisters, Simone, Mary, Rolande, Yolande and brothers Arthur and Roderick.
