RANGELEY – Selectmen and the town manager Tuesday backed passage of state referendum Question 1A, which calls for the state to pay 55 percent of the cost of public education.

“I encourage everyone to get out and vote,” Town Manager Perry Ellsworth said of the June 8 referendum. “I personally support Question 1A. I encourage you to vote for 1A.”

The town will hold elections from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 8 at the town office.

Absentee ballots may be picked up until 4 p.m. June 7, and people may register to vote at the polls June 8.

The annual town meeting warrant is available at the town office. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 15 at the Rangeley Lakes Regional School gymnasium.

Selectmen voted to renew the operating licenses of The Country Club Inn, Rangeley Rotary Club and the Red Onion.

Code Enforcement Officer Bob Griscom updated selectmen on the Ordinance Committee, which is drafting several new and revised laws on mooring, shorefront setbacks, zoning and roads.

Selectmen authorized Ellsworth to put two surplus vehicles from the Chick Hill Treatment Plant out to bid. The vehicles, both in disrepair, include a 1992 four-wheel-drive Ford with plow and a 1985 two-wheel drive Ford.

The Maine Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing on improvements to Route 4 between Madrid and Sandy River Plantation at 7 p.m. June 3 at the Rangeley Lakes Regional School. Maps of the proposed project are available at the town office, prior to the hearing.

The next meeting of selectmen will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 22 at the town office.
