LEEDS – Four people are vying for one seat on the Board of Selectmen and two are seeking one seat on the SAD 52 school board in the municipal election. Polls will open from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 4, at the Town Office.

Board of Selectmen

Theodore Barker

Education: Livermore Falls High School

Family: Married, four grown sons

Occupation: Farmer

Community service: Twenty-seven years on the Board of Selectmen

Quote: “I would like to do anything possible to control taxes in town and carry out the wishes of the people in town.”

Howard E. Cooke Jr.

Education: Winthrop High School; University of Maine

Family: Married, three grown children

Occupation: Retired state liquor enforcement officer

Community service: Active member of Concerns of Police Survivors, a nationwide support group for survivors of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty

Quote: Cooke wants “to look over all the proposals for spending in the town to at least make educated choices about how much money we are going to spend. Nobody’s interested in saving money if they can only save it $500 at a time. They want to save it millions at a time.”

Laurie B. Marston

Education: Leavitt Area High School

Family: Married, two sons

Occupation: Homemaker

Community service: Alternate member of the Appeals Board; Friends of Leeds volunteer; Leeds Central School volunteer

Vernon R. Smith

Education: Attended the University of Maine and the University of Rhode Island

Family: Married, two grown children

Occupation: Retired

Community service: Fifteen years on the SAD 52 Board of Directors; served on the boards of two credit unions

Quote: “My concern is our spending and how to balance that. The whole state is out of control with property taxes. We’re forcing young people out of the state. Both of my kids live out of state. They’re both college educated.”

Coreene A. Baumann

Education: Master’s degree, University of Illinois

Family: Married, two children

Occupation: Librarian by profession; currently, a stay-at-home mom

Community service: Fund-raising for the Leeds Volunteer Fire Department; volunteer at Leeds Central School; member of the Recreation Committee and the Old Town House Committee

Quote: “I want to get the information to the people before decisions are made so members of the community actually have a say. I feel the members of the board are there to serve the community.”

Catherine N. Carey

Education: Springfield Community College, Springfield, Mass.

Family: Married, four grown children

Occupation: Business manager for dental practice

Community service: Held volunteer positions in SAD 52 schools; volunteered for several athletic associations, Girl Scout leader; committee member of Rural Community Action Ministry; member of the Allocations Panel of Androscoggin Valley United Way

Quote: “For 22 years I have had children in SAD 52 schools. This is the first year I haven’t. For 22 years I have felt that the SAD 52 board has been open to parents and I want to make sure that continues to be the case.”

Unopposed candidates

Road Commissioner Robert G. Addison Jr. and Fire Chief Glenn J. Holt are running for re-election to one-year terms.
