RUMFORD – The DAV Mobile Service Office will be at the following locations to provide counseling and claim filing assistance: Monday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Rumford VA Clinic, 191 Lincoln Ave., Rumford; Tuesday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wal-Mart, 100 Mt. Auburn Ave., Auburn.

Like all DAV services, help from the Mobile Service Office is free to all veterans and members of their families.

House tour

BATH – Sagadahoc Preservation Inc. will offer a tour of 10 historic houses with gardens and two churches from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 12. The tickets will be $18 at the door. Presale tickets ($15) may be purchased at Magnolia, Now You’re Cooking, and Springer’s in Bath; Georgetown Pottery in Brunswick; and at Brigham and Cooke in Freeport.

The Winter Street Center at 880 Washington St. will serve as a central location for issuing tickets with a self-guided map for identifying the houses and gardens on the tour.

Volunteers will answer questions and give suggestions at the center, where food and drinks will be available. Bathroom facilities will also be available at the center. Proceeds will benefit restoration of the part of Winter Street Center known as the church sanctuary.

Grange camp

CHINA – The Junior Committee of the Maine State Grange is registering children age 10 to 17 for Junior Grange Camp to be held from Aug. 15 to 21 at Friends Camp in South China. The cost for the week is $168 and camp scholarships are available.

Events planned for the week include swimming and outdoor activities, crafts, workshops on topics of interest, earning merit badges and a finger spelling sign language contest.

Aviation camp

BANGOR – Aviation Career Education Camp is a nationwide proactive program designed to help high school students who have a strong interest in an aviation career prepare for their future. The camp was developed by the Federal Aviation Administration and works in partnership with Eastern Maine Community College, Telford Aviation, Maine Air National Guard, Maine Army Guard, Bangor International Airport and hundreds of federal, state and local businesses and volunteers.

Thirty-five students are selected by completing an application form, submitting a teacher or guidance counselor recommendation, two handwritten essays and a $50 refundable deposit.

This year’s tuition is $450, which covers housing, food, transportation, staff, hats and T-shirts, model rockets and miscellaneous supplies.

Peace conference

ORONO – The first International Peace Conference will be held at the University of Maine at Orono from June 18 to 20. There will be six speakers and 80 presenters, including 10 artists exhibiting works on peace.

The celebration of peace will include poets, writers, artists, musicians, yoga, energy medicine and dance as well as restorative justice, non-violence, native American spirituality and storytelling.

Lakes conference

GORHAM – The Maine Lakes Conference, Maine Congress of Lakes Association and the Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program annual meetings will be held Saturday, June 19, at the University of Southern Maine.

There will be technical presentations, prizes and food.

The conference will feature a morning plenary session, followed by volunteer recognition and awards, brief annual meetings for Maine Congress of Lakes Association, http://www.mainecola.org, and the Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program, http://www.MaineVolunteerLakeMonitors.org, and afternoon breakout sessions.

Registration is free for all certified water quality volunteer monitors and certified invasive plant patrol volunteers. Those who wish to become certified can contact Roberta Hill [email protected] or 783-7733.
