I am writing to set the record straight regarding the letter written by Jacqueline Smith (May 19).

My mother wrote the letter not at the coaxing of the Paul Madore for Senate campaign, as suggested, but for what some people might consider selfish reasons. Having worked under the Maine State Retirement System for 17 plus years and being close to retirement, she was shaken by the possibility of the benefits she has worked hard for being weakened.

Funds were often taken from the Social Security with the good intentions of putting the money back. That never happens and that system is in jeopardy. The same could happen with Maine State Retirement.

Common sense and the need to have representatives who will look out for its constituents was her motive for the letter. It’s unfortunate that people can’t see that.

Programs can be cut, but retirements programs should not be touched.
