WALES – Voters at the annual town meeting June 12 will consider a comprehensive plan for the second time in two decades.
One was approved in the 1980s, but the state rejected it, Selectmen Chairman Paul Burgess said. “It was not much of a plan,” he said.
“I haven’t heard any rumor about it. We’ve had a lot of public hearings on it. I haven’t heard anyone say they were for it or against it,” Burgess said.
On the issue of money, Burgess said the tax rate of $24.50 might not go up.
“Spending is not up that much so I think we can hold it,” he said, depending on the new valuation.
“School spending is up, but I don’t know by how much,” Burgess said. “The school budget may create a little controversy, which it usually does.”
All municipal offices in Wales are filled by nomination from the floor and election at town meeting. Positions open this year are one selectman, currently held by Brian Severy; one School Union 44 director, currently held by Robert English; town clerk; tax collector; treasurer and road commissioner.
The town meeting will begin at 9 a.m. June 12 at Wales Central School.
