AUBURN – When you are the underdog, there isn’t much to loose and an awful lot to gain by playing with reckless abandon.

That is exactly what No. 10 Wiscasset did against No. 7 Livermore Falls on Tuesday. And it was exactly what the Redskins had in mind when they squared off against No. 2 St. Dom’s in a Western Maine Class C baseball quarterfinal Thursday afternoon.

There were just a couple of hitches in their game plan.

The first thing standing in their way was Ryan Turgeon. The senior fireballer had something to prove after a heartbreaking loss to Jay last season in the Western Maine finals. Turgeon (six strikeouts, one walk, and two hits) was not about to let his team down.

A routine ground ball to the first batter and a pair of strikeouts set the tone for what would prove to be a short afternoon as the Saints (13-2) cruised to a 13-0 win over Wiscasset in a game shortened by the 10-run mercy rule.

“Were a very young team with no quit in our hearts,” said coach Wiscasset Todd Sousa. “We came into this game expecting to play the way we did Tuesday in our upset win.”

Hitch two came in the first inning as the Saints jumped on Redskins starter Ben Matzell for a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first inning without the benefit of a hit. They added four more in the third inning and put the game out of reach with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Josh Dwinal and Jack Lavoie paced the Saints attack with a pair of hits while Turgeon helped his own cause, chipping in with a two-run single in a seven-run fourth inning to account for the final score.

“We got a great effort from Ryan on the mound and the defense was solid,” said Lavoie, a senior shortstop.

“I throw the ball and let the defense play,” said Turgeon, who benefited from an error-free game as the Saints advance to play the winner of the Telstar-Boothbay game on Saturday.

“Ryan was able to hit his spots especially in the fourth inning when he struck out the side after allowing a leadoff double,” said St. Dom’s coach Allen Turgeon.

The Redskins were only able to muster a pair of hits off Turgeon, with Ben Emery singling in the third inning and J.T. Haggett doubling in the fourth.
